The Deseret News seeks a data-driven Newsletter Editor to help manage strategy, vision and execution of the company’s newsletter program. This individual will work closely with editorial, product and sales teams to improve newsletter performance and drive subscriber growth. They will embrace structured experimentation, testing and emerging technologies.
This position is primarily strategic and focused on audience growth and newsletter performance. While a background in writing or journalism could be helpful, this is not a position for candidates seeking to become reporters or editors. This position will work a hybrid schedule in our offices in Downtown SLC.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, a related field, or equivalent experience, is preferred. Journalism experience is highly valued.
4-6 years of experience in journalism, communications, or a related field
Strong writing skills suited for a journalism environment, with the ability to write, edit and refine content and headlines effectively
Basic understanding of design with an eye for aesthetics and detail
Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with an audience and a keen interest in understanding user behavior
Goal-oriented, taking ownership of responsibilities
Sound understanding of accuracy and fairness
Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays when required
Core Responsibilities:
Drives the growth of subscribers and the performance of new and existing newsletters through detailed monitoring of metrics
Collaborates with stakeholders on strategy and reports regularly on performance and key results
Builds various emails, as needed, throughout the week
Creates and manages a production schedule that ensures all newsletters are delivered
Regularly works in the newsroom to coordinate and collaborate with colleagues from across the company
Uses AI tools to enhance production without sacrificing journalistic integrity
Provides dedicated subscriber support and ensuring an optimal subscriber experience
Understands the Deseret News' existing and aspirational audiences
Day-to-Day Activities:
Compiling and scheduling a variety of editorial-focused email newsletters
Collaborating with colleagues to ensure consistent, timely delivery of newsletter content
Coordinating with our sales team to ensure newsletters meet revenue targets
Frequently analyzing newsletter metrics to monitor performance indicators and objectives
Identifying data trends and providing actionable insights to the product/editorial teams to reinforce growth strategy
Executing strategic testing, experiments and outreach (such as A/B testing and user surveys) designed to optimize and strengthen newsletter growth and engagement
Streamlining and maintaining the cleanliness of newsletter lists
Offering first-line support to our subscribers, answering inquiries and troubleshooting issues
An ideal candidate will have:
Prior experience in email marketing, data analytics and A/B testing, coupled with an analytical mindset to leverage data in decision making
Flexibility to adapt comfortably under shifting deadlines and evolving priorities
A strong passion for crafting excellent content
Comfort and familiarity with using CRM platforms (or similar) for automations, email drafting and user data management
An interest in keeping up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in newsletters and digital publishing
A habit of consuming newsletter publications from other news sources
A familiarity with the history, heritage, culture and politics of Utah and its surrounding states
