Job Description

Metro State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, and four-time recipient of the Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire a Director of Community Engagement.  This is a full-time probationary position within the division of Academic Affairs.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts to achieve the university’s strategic goal of providing meaningful contributions to sustainable community development, student growth and achievement, and the career development of faculty and staff as members of an engaged community.
  • Provide leadership to ensure a well-administered Office of Community Engagement
  • Cultivate and sustain multi-faceted partnerships for the benefit of students, faculty and staff, as well as supporting the university’s commitment to civic and community engagement between the university and community organizations and agencies.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement division on developing the case for philanthropic support of community engagement activities.

This position will require in-person and occasional evening and/or weekend work.

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:

  • Master’s degree plus five years of advanced professional experience in a content specific field or Bachelor’s degree plus six years of advanced professional experience in a content specific field or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education, and/or advanced professional experience.
  • At least three (3) years of experience leading community engagement, academic experiential learning, and/or public service in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in leading and managing multi-person, diverse teams in dynamic and multifaced environments.
  • A  comprehensive knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of community engagement processes in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing the impact of community engagement activities across various audiences including faculty, staff, community partners and/or others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, community organizations, municipal, state, regional, national and international audiences, and/or members of the public.
  • An understanding of regional economic, workforce, and social issues, and the role of higher education within cross-sector collaboration and collective impact.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness with each of the following: budgeting, financial management, administration and grant writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and national trends, issues, organizations, opportunities and resources and alignment with university resources and interests.

Preferred Qualification 

  • Ph.D. in public affairs, community engagement, civic engagement, social science or closely related field.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in community engagement related activities, which could include community organizing, civic engagement, public engagement, public planning or other related activities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading faculty professional development programs to support community engagement, academic experiential learning, or public service in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated success obtaining external funding from grant writing efforts;
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing annual workplans to support strategic goals and plans.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.

 

Physical Requirements of the Job

Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.

Work Shift (Hours / Days of work)

Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm. Ability to work flexible hours, with occasional nights and weekends.

Telework (Yes/No)

Minimum of 3 days in the office with potential to telework 2 days a week.

The School/Academic Department: Metro State University has long prioritized community engagement as way to enhance the learning of our students while also benefiting our local community.  The Office of Community Engagement provides faculty development and support for faculty members who engage in community-based learning.  The strategic plan for 2025-2029 names community engagement as a key priority for the university.

Salary:  This is a Minnesota State University Association of Administrative and Service Faculty (MSUAASF) Range E position with a salary range of $62,405 (minimum) to $128,300 (maximum), with an approved maximum salary of XX. Please know that while there is a large range for this position, we will have a maximum we are allowed to compensate based on the budget, your experience, qualifications, and equity at the university for similar positions.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (Minnesota State) and the MSUAASF organization.
