JOB SUMMARY

This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job.

The Perioperative Assistant works primarily in a Perioperative setting to carry out clinician's orders, perform established patient care procedures, and to participate in patient education commensurate with appropriate training. The Perioperative Assistant must be able to work effectively and appropriately with health care providers to assure that patients are treated in accordance with established standards of quality patient care. Strict patient confidentiality must be maintained at all times. Perioperative Assistants are classified as paraprofessionals who perform duties in a Perioperative setting under the supervision of the registered nurse and/or supervising physician. Additionally, the Perioperative Assistant will have clerical responsibilities that facilitate the flow of the areas to which they are assigned within Perioperative Services

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. They are not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks, and responsibilities. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned.

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

* Greets and welcomes patients and assists them with initial questions regarding appointments, payments, schedules, etc.
* Answers multi-line phone, screens and routes calls, takes messages for clinic staff and physicians Assures appropriate verifications and authorizations are complete before patient sees provider.
* Communicates status of patients to families and connects families with any necessary resources (e.g. social work, chaplaincy, etc).
* Assists RNs in maintaining professional, caring atmosphere for patients.
* Transports patients between various departments within Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
* Provides a clean, safe and orderly work and patient care environment (e.g cleans patient bed spaces after patient discharge and keeps the family waiting room in an orderly condition).
* Collects and sends specimens to hospital laboratory and ensure proper handling for transport.
* Collects data as directed by the RN.
* Disassembles and routs the medical records to appropriate department(s) upon discharge, transfer or expiration.
* May assist in Pre Op and/or PACU duties including, but not limited to: obtaining patient height, weight, vital signs, and NPO status, assist with procedures as requested by the RN.
* Monitors and maintains clinical supplies and orders replacements as needed (includes stocking exam rooms and PACU bedside carts).
* Prepares patient exam rooms prior to visit to ensure that proper equipment and supplies are set up for examinations, required procedures, and/or treatments.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

* Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent
* Experience: One (1) year of directly related work experience
* License/Certification: Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers

KNOWLEDGE

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education or licensure/certification.

* Customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families and staff, including high volume and stressful situations.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
* Ability to problem-solve effectively using appropriate resources. Is productive in workflow, skills and organization.
* Ability to provide care as needed and as described in the department's policies and procedures.
* Ability to provide care or education/training about patient care appropriate to the ages of patients served in the unit.
* Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
* Knowledge of basic nursing and medical terminology.
* Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation methods, practices, and procedures.
* Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
* Knowledge of normal temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate of healthy adult, adolescents, children and infants.
* Knowledge of principles of growth and development over the age groups life span and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients.
* Knowledge of protocols for patient records.
* Knowledge of role in emergency response.
* Knowledge of facility layout, clinic locations and room numbering system for efficient transport.
* Knowledge of safety code measures during the transport of patients.
* Skill in use of monitoring equipment including, but not limited to, oxygen saturation monitor, cardiorespiratory monitor, thermometer.
* Ability to maneuver wheelchairs, gurneys, and other equipment as needed.

Pay Range
Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.
Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.
Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $33.94 to $38.06
