About the Role


The Athletic is accepting applications for its Leon H. Carter newsroom internship, a 12-week remote program, which will run from the end of August/early September into November of 2025. The intern will be embedded on our colleges desk, which will expose the intern to every facet of the newsroom. The mission of The Athletic’s internship program is to attract and develop the industry’s next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative coverage while helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world.


The application deadline is April 18, 2025.


This is a remote internship that may require some travel to New York City. Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office.


The rate of pay for this role is $20.00 USD per hour. 


Responsibilities
  • Provide coverage of a college football team during the season, inclusive of news, features and game stories.
  • Attend brainstorming sessions and pitch ideas to the editor and colleagues. 
  • Have great news judgment, along with an ability to source build. 
  • Multitask across multiple story endeavors and prioritize accordingly.
  • Write quick news stories and provide analysis for a variety of platforms. 
  • Work collaboratively with other reporters. 


Requirements
  • Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply; undergraduate juniors and seniors preferred. Ability to work a 30-40 hour work week.
  • Previous newsroom internship experience is a plus.
  • Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.
  • Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports.
  • This is a remote internship that will require some travel to New York City.

  • A portfolio of at least 5 relevant samples showcasing strong writing skills.
