What is the job?
Thorlabs Ltd designs, manufactures and ships a diverse product portfolio ranging from small mechanical items of a few grams to optical tables weighing more than 1 Ton. Our business model means we are a high mix low volume manufacturer, which presents challenging packaging requirements. A new position is being opened for a Packaging & Process engineer which will be responsible for designing and optimising packaging processes using Lean techniques within our supply chain, manufacturing facility and distribution network.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 4.30 pm (Hybrid working available)

We use these products in manufacturing and research, from fibre optics to piezo motors. We are the gold standard with optics laboratories worldwide. There are now 22 facilities across the world in 9 countries. Here in Ely, we are responsible for the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line.
Where you will be working?
It’s a hybrid role, working in our new purpose-built facility in Witchford, Ely as well as your home. Our purpose-built facility is just 12 miles from Cambridge, within the beautiful mediaeval city of Ely. There are train and bus links to Ely from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street London, and our site is within distance of Ely train station and Ely Bus station.

In this pivotal role, you will dive deep into our diverse product portfolio, helping to design and optimize packaging processes that keep our operations running smoothly. As a high mix, low volume manufacturer, we face unique challenges in packaging, and your expertise will be instrumental in enhancing our supply chain efficiency. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams in our innovative facility in Witchford, Ely, and have the flexibility of hybrid working. We're looking for someone with a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, as well as at least two years of experience in process improvement, especially using Lean techniques. Your responsibilities will range from using CAD software like Kasemake and Solid Works for packaging design to evaluating existing processes for improvement in safety, functionality, cost, and sustainability. You'll play a key role in selecting materials, managing BOM data through MRP systems, and collaborating with vendors to ensure optimal packaging solutions.
