Marketing Intern - Go to Market

About the Marketing Department:

The Marketing team drives brand awareness, customer engagement, and trip bookings through strategic campaigns, compelling content, and data-driven insights. They manage digital and traditional marketing channels, optimize customer outreach, and enhance the brand’s presence to inspire travelers and grow the business. 

The department is comprised of several teams, which include the below:  

  • Direct Mail & CRM: Engages past and prospective guests through targeted email campaigns and personalized direct mail, leveraging data to drive bookings and loyalty. 
  • PR & Partnership: Builds brand awareness and credibility through media outreach, strategic partnerships, and influencer collaborations to expand Backroads’ reach. 
  • Website Management: Oversees the website’s content, functionality, and user experience to ensure seamless navigation, accurate information, and optimized conversion. 
  • Brand, Content, Community: Responsible for the creative design, content and social media presence for the Backroads brand.

About the Role

The Go to Market Intern will play a key role in supporting the Marketing Team to successfully execute a variety of tasks related to the launch of our 2026 itineraries. The main responsibilities of this role include communicating deliverables and timelines cross-departmentally to support catalog production and trip content on the web and performing Quality Assurance across all digital and print creative materials. This role requires someone who is knowledgeable about the creative production process, is extremely detail oriented, and takes the initiative to follow up with stakeholders and contributors. This position offers valuable experience supporting a range of Go to Market tasks in a complex and fast-paced business environment, while contributing to a variety of exciting marketing projects at Backroads.

What You’ll be Doing:

  • Build cross-functional workstreams in Microsoft Teams channels
  • Track Marketing production tasks in Excel spreadsheets
  • Assist in QA’ing live web pages
  • Update and clean up content in Drupal CMS
  • Support content and data migration efforts to enable new CMS
  • Prepare, send and track completion of Trip Development assignments; follow up to ensure timely receipt of missing information (e.g. hotel classification, activity levels)
  • Update and post Prospective Guest Itineraries, applying “previous year” watermark
  • Create and link Flipping Book (digital catalog)
  • Download and stage and collect credits for guest/leader photo submissions
  • Create image galleries for print projects in Portfolio
  • Refresh photos and videos for Travel Agent portal

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university or college. 
  • Ability to grasp new concepts and systems quickly and efficiently. 
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills. 
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate needs and take initiative.
  • Eagerness to learn, with a drive to explore new ideas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Ability to think critically and confidently bring questions to the table. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). 
  • Passion for travel and the Backroads' mission.

  • On-site, Berkeley, CA
  • Summer internship from May 20th - August15th

Salary Ranges:

$23.08 - $28.85

At Backroads, we uphold a commitment to transparency and fairness within our hiring process, particularly regarding compensation. The salary range posted for each role applies to both employment offers and employees actively working in the role.

New hires are typically offered a starting salary between the minimum and midpoint of the range to ensure there is continued opportunity for salary progression during your employment at Backroads, reflecting our commitment to rewarding ongoing dedication, high performance, and significant contributions to our team. This approach not only supports our budgeting strategy but also our intention to foster an environment that encourages long-term growth and strong relationships between Backroads and our valued employees.

Our office roles are onsite in our Berkeley headquarters, unless specifically noted as 'available for remote'. We do allow one work-from-home day a week, as well as one work-from-anywhere week per year. This pay range is intended for in-person work in our Berkeley, CA headquarters. Pay ranges for remote-eligible roles will be subject to adjustment based on the geolocation of the employee.
