College Aide, 1st Year graduate
The Bureau of Communicable Disease tracks over 70 infectious diseases and investigates disease outbreaks in New York City. The foodborne disease group oversees surveillance of all foodborne diseases, investigates approximately 30 foodborne outbreaks a year and participates in many multi-state investigations.
The Foodborne disease group has openings for new interns to assist foodborne disease epidemiologists with foodborne illness and outbreak investigations. The candidates would start in May/June 2025 and continue working 20 hours/week during the school year and 35 hours/week during the summer.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Successful candidates will assist foodborne disease epidemiologists with the following activities: Surveillance for foodborne diseases such as Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, and Shiga toxin-producing E.coli infections. Collection of case data from health care providers and interviewing case-patients about their illness and exposure. Outbreak investigations. Data entry, data management, data analysis, and/or miscellaneous projects; and assist with other disease investigations within the Bureau of Communicable Disease where necessary.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology
Currently enrolled in a graduate (MPH, MS or PhD) program in public health or related field

Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
