An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a Stress Engineer to join our Critical Parts Lifing (CPL) team in Derby. Other locations – Bristol or Inchinnan will be considered as well.

Our team performs structural mechanical integrity and lifing calculations for critical parts of Trent XWB, Trent 1000 and Trent 7000 engines.

In this role, you will be responsible for the structural analysis of a variety of Critical Part components. These include fan discs, compressor discs, blisks & drums, turbine discs & cover plates as well as mainline shafts and stub-shafts. The components are subject to some of the most severe and complex loading and temperature conditions temperature  found in the aviation industry and any engineering field, and they are designed and analysed with high fidelity against aviation authorities certification safe life requirements.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location.  It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement.  As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:

You will be responsible for structural analysis to ensure mechanical Integrity and lifing of a range of critical components. You will:

  • Conduct mechanical integrity, stress and lifing assessments using finite element analysis and other numerical models.

  • Specify and conduct mechanical experiments, for the purpose of underwriting designs, and validating analytical or empirical models.

  • Identify root cause and resolve problems through evaluative judgements and analysis.

  • Deliver against programme milestones within agreed cost, timescale and quality requirements.

  • Be a point of contact between the mechanical integrity discipline and other functions and customers.

  • Work with other areas including Component Design teams, Design Integration teams, Engine Project teams, Engine Development teams, Services & Life Cycle Engineering teams, Materials teams, Manufacturing teams and Repair & Overhaul teams.

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, Materials Technology, Mathematics, Physics or a similar discipline. Equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.

  • Motivated person, enthusiastic to work in highly technical and challenging aerospace engineering environment.

  • Knowledge and/or experience in Critical Part component lifing methods and analyses such LCF, HCF, damage tolerant/crack propagation (deterministic & probabilistic), corrosion, rotor integrity (disc burst, rim peel & blade release).

  • Proficient in the use of 2D & 3D finite element stress analysis tools (such as SC03/ ABAQUS/ ANSYS/ NASTRAN/ NX/ Hypermesh) – in elastic, inelastic, thermal-mechanical, contact and frictional assessments.

  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity, liability and aerospace certification frameworks preferred.

  • Good technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts.
