About the Role

 

Slate is hiring a politics editor to help drive the magazine's coverage of the second Trump administration and the country under it. We’re looking for an editor with loads of energy and clear ideas for how to cover this era and, eventually, its aftermath. We’re looking for someone with a strong background covering Washington and politics around the country, and ideas for how to work in tandem with our exceptional jurisprudence team. The preference for this position is to be based in Washington, D.C., although exceptional New York–based or remote candidates may be considered.


Key Responsibilities
  • Finding distinct ways for Slate’s politics writers to cover the news, including through analysis and reporting
  • Planning and executing ambitious editorial projects, including features and packages
  • Collaborating and coordinating with other Slate editors
  • Motivating and providing support for a team of talented writers
  • Giving Slate's audience the smartest possible ways to think about and understand the world, drawing on our strength as a general-interest magazine


Requirements
  • Tons of ideas, including the ability to quickly find the most illuminating kernel in any news story
  • At least 7 years' experience working as an editor, with some (if not most) focusing on politics
  • The ability to edit for voice, and a track record of eliciting great work from young talent and more established writers, including freelancers
  • A desire to work at a fast pace, and strong organizational, management, and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for finding unique ways to look at the news and a strong understanding of Slate


$115,000 - $125,000 a year
