What You'll Do


YWCA CareerWork$ Ready is an online job readiness training created during the response to the unprecedented need to help job seekers reenter the workforce during the pandemic health crisis. CareerWork$ Ready program targets low income; disadvantaged job seekers reenter the workforce during the pandemic health crisis. The CareerWork$ Ready Instructor's primary responsibility is to provide coaching and training sessions to participants of the YWCA CareerWork$ Ready program. The CareerWork$ Ready Instructor will also provide employment preparation, career navigation, job placement and retention support to CareerWork$ Ready program participants. Secondary responsibilities include working with the CareerWork$ Ready team to recruit, evaluate and screen candidates for program enrollment and assisting student's in identifying strengths and overcoming barriers to successful completion of both CareerWork$ Ready and BankWork$ programs and employment. This position will prioritize resources for communities structurally positioned furthest from opportunity and will center services on the needs and experiences of BIPOC communities within Seattle King County, especially Black/African American, Latinx, and refugee/immigrant individuals and families residing in Seattle King County.


This position has a social justice component that will require critical thinking around how the external systems impact the work that we are doing through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism work and grounding those principles in everyday work, as well as working well in non-white environments and championing anti-racism policy, are required job skills and core values.



Expectations of your role:
  • Work with community employers and partners to recruit, screen, and interview and assess applicants for program services
  • Use provided curriculum materials to deliver 3-week Training classes responsive to the needs of job seekers.
  • Maintain client tile documentation on each participant including accurate documentation on classroom performance and produce regular reports indicating participant placement, and salary progression.
  • Stay current to changes and trends through professional development and gaining insight through partner feedback
  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
  • Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning and modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse participant needs.
  • Evaluate participants’ performance fairly and consistently and return participants work promptly to promote maximum learning through LMS (Learning Management Systems).
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, in SmartSheets and make readily available to Program Manager and funders upon request.
  • Work closely with Program Manager to align teaching material and coordinate curriculum updates, additions, and changes with CareerWork$ National and participate in training other markets as needed. 
  • Assist participants in: resume preparation, completion of paper and on-line job applications, on-line interview preparation, and follow up communications with employers. 
  • Uses assessment and diagnostic tools including the Self-Sufficiency Calculator, CIFF Dashboard and Snapshot, Jobscan, Big Interview and other resources, including Map Your Career, Career Bridge, Career 
  • Coach, O*NET to help job seekers understand and organize information related to labor market demand, wages, training requirements, and cost of living.
  • Administers strength-based assessment tools to determine employment needs, goals, and gaps and the need for additional community resources.
  • Coach participants in developing job skills and provide participants with case management to remove employment barriers
  • Promote candidacy of program participants for placement in any employment
  • Conduct a structured participant follow-up effort and provide appropriate coaching and support to maximize job retention of placed participants
  • Coordinate with Career Navigator to produce, maintain and update regular reports indicating participant information, placement, retention and salary progression
  • Coordinate with Career Navigator to assist participants in identifying strengths to overcome barriers that lead to successful completion of program and employment through one-on-one coaching during course of program
  • Build relationships with employers and partners to develop job opportunities for participants 
  • Collaborate with community-based organizations (CBO's), community colleges, and WorkSource centers to market the program.
  • Collaborate with the Economic Security for All programs to coordinate and deliver re-employment services for participants residing in high-poverty area in King County.
  • Connects participants with culturally-relevant resources and provides financial support services on an as- needed basis.
  • Provides job retention, career growth, and follow-up support including strategies for balancing childcare, time and stress management.
  • Adapts to virtual services, including remote enrollment, career navigation, and training, and effectively uses technology and remote work tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Adobe Sign and Share drive.
  • Advocates with funders, partners, employers, housing providers etc. for racially equitable and socially just outcomes for YWCA participants.
  • Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies and procedures; and actively participate in the agency's Emergency Preparedness program and activities
  • Other duties as assigned


Must have's to be successful:
  • One to two years of demonstrated experience performing work related to participant recruitment and enrollment, career assessment and planning, and workforce development, job search, and job placement assistance. 
  • Knowledge of the banking industry and/or workforce development required
  • Knowledge of case management strongly preferred
  • Additional experience in program coordination, training delivery, job development, and program development strongly preferred
  • Experience working with multi-cultural and/or low-income populations
  • Demonstrated understanding of social services, social work, education, or related field desired. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty
  • Commitment to diversity and ability to work well with diverse family styles and multi-ethnic population
  • Sensitivity to the needs of YWCA clients who are homeless, low income, limited English speaking, or impacted by domestic violence, substance abuse or other barriers to employment
  • Understanding of issues related to racism, poverty, homelessness and the employment, housing, governmental, educational, and social service systems that serve or disserve low-income people of color
  • Demonstrated understanding of how to center participants furthest away from opportunities such as but not limited to African American residents and people of color who are experiencing homelessness
  • Knowledge of career navigation and employment best practices preferred
  • Experience with outcomes reporting including both quantitative and qualitative reports, preferred
  • Strong customer service orientation and instructional background
  • Sensitivity to the needs of YWCA participants who are experiencing homelessness, are low income, and who may be impacted by racism, domestic violence, immigration, chemical dependency, the criminal justice system, and/or other challenging circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to make sound judgments without on-site supervision
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Computer familiarity with Windows, Word., Excel, and Outlook
  • Candidate must be able to travel independently between multiple work sites


Hours, Rate, and Benefits
  • Hourly Rate: $25.00 DOE
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave plans
  • At the time of hire, employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan
  • After two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund


Physical Requirements
  • Continuously exchanges information through listening and talking with clients, agency staff, employers, representatives of community organizations and other individuals in the community
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits, and climbs in performing duties in the office and in traveling to off-site meetings
  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 5 lbs. of paperwork, files, and training materials, occasionally up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequently to occasionally performs close work while updating files, reading program information, and using computer
  • Occasionally kneels, bends, pushes and pulls in obtaining files in drawers
