Associate Director of Residence Life

The Associate Director of Residence Life leads a team of Resident Directors, working alongside them to assist with escalated residential student crisis, behavioral, and resourcing situations and needs. This position reports to the Director of Residence Life, assisting them by producing, overseeing, and implementing leadership development and student development programming and curriculum. This position supervises a team of 8 Resident Directors, providing leadership and resourcing in various one on one and small group contexts for the purpose of professional development, follow-up, and case management advice and assistance. The Associate Director of Residence Life engages and interacts regularly with Resident Assistants in development and engagement contexts, such as teaching RA Connect, facilitating RA Orientation, and hosting other Residence Life events. This position leads 1-2 committees comprised of various Resident Directors and veteran Resident Assistants, facilitating a collaborative environment to accomplish various Residence and Student Life objectives. This position assists the Director of Residence Life in the development of Resident Assistant curriculum, as well as other Residence Life programming initiatives. The ideal candidate is emotionally intelligent, relational, resilient, self-motivated, possesses advanced crisis resolution skills, has extensive experience communicating in both small and large group contexts, and can teach and transfer their skillset to others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise Resident Directors

  • Conduct biweekly one-on-one meetings to discuss, debrief, and strategize solutions for hall-related issues, and to facilitate professional and spiritual development growth opportunities.
  • Plan and lead weekly male or female Resident Director small group for the purpose of communication, community building, spiritual development, policy updates, and debriefing crisis scenarios.
  • Review Resident Director work performance and offer feedback, correction, and coaching as needed.
  • Provide guidance in elevated residential student crisis scenarios in an on-call, as needed, basis.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the planning and development of various RD training occurrences, such as New RD Orientation, RD Training, etc.

Resident Assistant Oversight, Programming & Selection

  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the planning and facilitation of annual Residence Life events and programming initiatives, such as RA Orientation, Boonies, and the RA Banquet.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the planning and facilitation of recurring Residence Life programming initiatives, such as RA Connect and the Redeeming Sexuality program.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life in the design and execution of the Resident Assistant selection, training, and disciplinary processes.
  • Lead the male or female RD team during the Resident Assistant selection process, providing guidance, communication, and instruction on all aspects of the process.
  • Facilitate Resident Assistant corrective reviews and other disciplinary actions.

Residential Student Case Management

  • Liaison with other University offices regarding residential student situations, issues, or resourcing needs.
  • Address escalated residential student disciplinary, behavioral, and crisis situations, corresponding with University stakeholders, student parents or guardians, and Student Life staff as the situation requires.
  • Assist and support Resident Directors in the management of ongoing and multiple-instance residential student cases.
  • Monitor and evaluate campus Incident Report briefs, ensuring that IRs are addressed, processed, and closed in a timely and effective manner.

Committee Leadership

  • Lead one to two committees comprised of Resident Directors and veteran Resident Assistants to accomplish Residence and Student Life objectives.
  • Facilitate a collaborative and team environment, ensuring that meetings are planned and executed smoothly, and that deliverables are met in a timely manner.

Residence Life Team Duties

  • Meet weekly with Residence Life team to plan, strategize, and meet objectives.
  • Work alongside the male or female Senior Resident Director to ensure that new Resident Directors have appropriate access to coaching and training resources.

Residence Life Representative Duties

  • Represent the Residence Life team at College for a Weekend, interfacing with prospective students and parents for the purpose of student recruitment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to students, parents, and other Residence Life stakeholders.
  • Represent Residence Life at various Student Affairs open houses, meet and greets, or other initiatives.

Other Duties

  • Lead and facilitate Summer Resident Director and Resident Assistant programs.
  • Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks as it pertains to Student Affairs.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

This position supervises 8 Resident Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or related area either in progress or completed.
  • 2-3 years of student or peer development and engagement experience.
  • 2-3 years of small and large group communication experience in workshop, seminar, or teaching contexts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or related area.
  • 3-4 years of student or peer development and engagement experience.
  • 3-4 years of small and large group communication experience in workshop, seminar, or teaching contexts.
  • 3-4 years of crisis management or lay counseling experience.

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is in an office setting.  However, work frequently occurs in a variety of other settings; including, but not limited to, residence halls, warehouses, and outdoor activities. 

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.  Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
