UX Design Director

Job Summary

We are a venture-backed startup developing next-generation orchestration software for autonomous systems. Our platform enables the complex coordination of multi-domain robotic systems with applications in defense and commercial sectors.

We are seeking an experienced design leader to shape the future of our human-computer interfaces. In this role, you will establish and drive our design vision, lead the development and implementation of a next-generation design system, and manage both in-house and contract designers. This is an opportunity to define the design practice at the forefront of robotics and autonomy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design strategy and vision for our robotics orchestration platform

  • Establish and maintain comprehensive design systems and guidelines

  • Create user experience frameworks for complex 3D visualizations and control interfaces

  • Manage and mentor design team, including contract designers

  • Collaborate closely with lead engineers on technical feasibility and implementation

  • Collaborate closely with product leaders to understand users and their requirements

  • Drive user research and translate findings into actionable design improvements

  • Own the end-to-end design process from concept to implementation

  • Establish design processes and documentation standards

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of product design experience

  • 3+ years of design leadership experience

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating complex technical interfaces

  • Experience with 3D visualization interfaces and spatial design

  • Proven track record of building and managing design systems

  • Experience managing design teams

  • Strong understanding of technical constraints and developer workflows

  • Excellence in standard design and prototyping tools (e.g. Figma)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in robotics, aerospace, or defense industries

  • Background in data visualization or real-time system monitoring

  • Knowledge of 3D web technologies (WebGL, Three.js)

  • Experience with Unreal Engine or Unity

  • Experience with enterprise software design

  • Familiarity with modern frontend development practices

This is a 6-month contract-to-hire position with an expected compensation range of $75–$125 per hour, commensurate with your experience, portfolio, and ability to contribute to project success.

*These benefits apply following the initial contract period, assuming the contractor transitions to W2 full-time employment.
