Quest Software is looking for an experienced technical writer to join our team in Canada. The technical writer is responsible for providing clear and accurate documentation for our software which is built to simplify and improve the management of critical enterprise data.  This role focuses on creating and maintaining high-quality content that aligns with Quest’s goal to provide an excellent user experience. Working within an Agile and Scrum-based framework, the writer collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to develop end user documentation that enables our customers to use our software efficiently. The candidate will be part of a global development team and will need to be able to overlap some working hours with team members in the US Eastern time zone.

Responsibilities

  • Working with product domain experts to gain a strong understanding of our products and customer use cases. 
  • Analyzing development requirements to determine the documentation deliverables for projects.
  • Participating in sprint planning, scrums, and retrospectives to coordinate documentation deliverables with development schedules.
  • Planning, creating, and delivering effective end user documentation (User Guides, Installation Guides, Release Notes, etc.).
  • Working closely with engineers, product managers, QA, Support, and UX teams to ensure content quality and accuracy.
  • Using HTML editors to work on simultaneous releases within an Agile environment.
  • Writing user interface and client-facing messaging within products.  
  • Adhering to technical documentation standards. 

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, strong organization skills. 
  • BA/BS with an emphasis in Computer Science or a writing field (English, Journalism, etc.) 
  • 5+ years of experience with planning and producing end-user documentation for enterprise level software applications and SaaS products. 
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycles and best practices.
  • Understanding of Agile and SCRUM methodologies and how documentation fits into this framework.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate in an Agile development environment.
  • Ability to transition among changing priorities and requirements when working with multiple engineering teams.
  • Experience working with remote product teams and managing documentation for multiple products.  
  • Experience using enterprise-level documentation toolchains. For example, source control systems (Git, SVN or TFS), XML- or HTML-editors (MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Help & Manual, etc.) for topic-based authoring. 

Assets that would be considered a benefit

  • Experience in enterprise software development.
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following: Active Directory/Microsoft Entra ID/Exchange Server/Microsoft 365 Exchange Online/SharePoint/Microsoft 365 SharePoint Online/IIS/SQL Server/DNS/OneDrive.
  • Working knowledge of virtualization (VMWare, Hyper-V, Azure VMs) including being capable of creating and using a virtual machine for review of software functionality for documentation purposes.  
  • Comfortable working in a DevOps environment with tools like Azure DevOps.
