About Sankofa Montessori

Sankofa Montessori embarked on its educational journey as a public charter school, receiving its charter from the Georgia State Charter School Commission in 2021. We officially opened our doors in July 2023, starting our adventure with Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades. As we chart our course, we added a 3rd grade in our second year and will be adding 4th grade during the upcoming school year, school year 25-26. Our mission is to empower children with the knowledge, skills, and agency needed to lead purposeful lives. Join our team and help us continue to chart our course.

Position Overview: We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Elementary School Counselor to support the academic success, emotional well-being, and social development of students in grades K–6. The counselor will collaborate with families, educators, and staff to create a safe and supportive environment where all children can thrive.

Role Responsibilities:

Student Support

  • Provide individual and small group counseling to support students’ academic, emotional, and behavioral growth
  • Help students develop age-appropriate social skills, coping strategies, and self-awareness
  • Identify and respond to students’ needs, including those related to trauma, grief, mental health, or crisis situations

Schoolwide SEL and Culture

  • Lead the implementation of a schoolwide social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum
  • Facilitate class-wide lessons or community circles to build a positive school culture
  • Partner with teachers on behavior plans, de-escalation strategies, and student regulation tools

Family & Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with families to address student needs and connect them with school and community-based resources
  • Provide workshops or resources for families on topics such as mental health, transitions, and parenting strategies

MTSS & Collaboration

  • Serve on the school’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) team
  • Participate in student support meetings and contribute to behavior and academic intervention planning
  • Track student progress and maintain records in accordance with ethical and legal standards
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

    • Education: Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field
    • Certification: Valid state certification/licensure as a school counselor (or eligibility to obtain)
    • Experience: Previous experience in a K–6 or urban school setting preferred
    • Skills:
      • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
      • Ability to build trusting relationships with students and families
      • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, SEL frameworks, and restorative approaches
      • Comfort working with a diverse student population, including students with IEPs and autism

COMPENSATION

  • We offer contributions to the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia (TRS) in accordance with Georgia state law, as well as an additional, optional 403(b) retirement account.

  • A daily planning period and weekly student early release for teacher collaboration, student work analysis, and peer professional development
  • Materials needed to be successful in your classroom, including teacher/student supplies/laptops, etc.
