Construction Safety Intern

Job Description

At the NYC Department of Buildings, we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code, and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism. NOTE: This summer internship is for up to 13 weeks, starting from the first day of the internship and ending no later than September 5, 2025. Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week in person.

About the Team

The Construction Safety division manages the development of safety standards and guidance; analyzes the Department’s and industry safety practices; engages with internal and external stakeholders on safety matters; performs proactive compliance inspections and responds to complaints at sites that require a Site Safety Manager (SSM), Site Safety Coordinator (SSC), or Construction Superintendent (CS), as well as low-rise and high-rise demolitions and excavations; conducts neighborhood, building class, and bad actor sweeps; and reviews requests to rescind Stop Work Orders (SWOs).

Position Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of Deputy Director, Construction Safety Standards and Guidance and Director, Construction Safety Enforcement the intern will:
- Participate in ride-alongs with inspectorial staff throughout the five boroughs.
- Conduct digital research on applications and buildings.
- Assist inspectorial staff in documenting inspection findings in written and photographic form.
- Assist inspectorial staff in preparing violations and all related documentation to prosecute violating conditions.
- Accompany inspectorial staff to OATH Hearings as an observer.
- Provide administrative office support for inspection operations.


Major/Field of Study
- Architecture, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field.

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
