Position Summary

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

The position requires a 4 day on campus presence with flexibility for virtual one day per week, subject to change based upon business needs and college policy. 

Partner with the Director of Administration to build an administrative structure that will support the School of the Environment and Sustainable Development. This position will serve as the administrative lead for the core administrative staff. As a core member of the administrative team and in conjunction with the Director of Administration, manage school-wide high-level process improvements through development, documentation and implementation that focus on appointment and administrative processes. Manage space-related needs such as room assignments, renovation coordination, and assist with the annual space inventory reporting. Fields day-to-day administrative inquiries and directs people to appropriate staff members.

Oversee and prioritize workflows; interview, hire, train, and supervise Assistants to the Section Heads, and a subset of the other administrative staff; partner with Director of Administration to prepare staff position descriptions and conduct staff performance reviews. Make recommendations for the Salary Improvement Program in conjunction with School Leadership.  Monitor compliance with university/department/college policies. 

This is a full-time position at 100% FTE.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or combination of education and relevant work experience of 2 years to 4 years.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 
  • Must have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Customer services skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with a broad range of people is essential.
  • Attention to details and organizational skills are critical.
  • Able to work quickly, effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential in nature; balancing conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
  • Ability to work with diverse employee base; provide daily direction; maintain confidentiality; seek out process improvements and have ability to communicate with professionalism and tack.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Cornell computer systems such as Workday, TAS, Kuali Financial System.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
