Job Description

In this role, you will lead and be responsible for the design, implementation, and balancing, of game loop systems and gameplay systems, down to the details, according to the Creative Director’s vision. You will also lead the system design team.

Key responsibilities

  • Work hand in hand with the Creative Director to achieve in the game their creative vision, intentions and expectations for the game systems and game experience balancing
  • Lead and be responsible for the design, implementation, and balancing, of game loop systems (progression, economy, RPG & itemisation, time limited events, daily quests…) and gameplay systems (core gameplay, character classes, enemies and bosses, open world and game mode activities, difficulty tiers…)
  • Collaborate with other dev team cells (content, level design, art & animation, gameplay programming) to ensure optimal communication of design info and achieve the results expected
  • Create design documentation from creative brief to detailed designs for game loop and gameplay systems
  • Lead and guide the system design team in their tasks, to ensure that the systems design and the game balancing answer the various constraints, meet the Creative Director’s expectations, and ultimately create the right player experience
  • Demonstrate pragmatism in your design priorities and decisions, to weight possible solutions and find the right ones to develop a live product and steer it through regular live updates (addition of content and balancing adjustments)
  • Set and share best practices in system design and balancing documentation, workflows, methodologies and tooling
  • Nurture and mentor the system design team to grow as designers
  • Redefine the specifications for systems configuration pipelines & tools needed by designers to configure and balance the game, and coordinate with tech team to improve those pipelines as necessary (eg pipeline to input data into the game and validate them safely)
  • Revamp existing tools to configure and balance the game (eg designers excels for tracking & calculation of parameters to input) to improve them
  • Constantly participate in finding solutions to fix buggy features and optimize systems, pushing for reworks when they are necessary to reach the expected quality

Qualifications

Relevant experience, skills and knowledge

  • Passionate about playing and making games, notably RPG games or simulation/strategy games
  • In-depth knowledge of the game industry, notably of the top RPG games in the F2P & GaaS genre
  • Detailed understanding of mobile players’ behaviours and latest business models trends
  • Strong understanding of the full development cycle of a game and a strong understanding of all its stages, from the conception to live phase
  • You already shipped at least a F2P and/or RPG game in a design lead role
  • Significant experience (at least 5 years) in a video game development team in the field of game design, ideally as a system designer in a leadership role, creating documentation and leading the implementation and balancing of various game loop systems. Ideally working on F2P RPG games with complex game loops (specifically MMORPG development experience is a plus).
  • Successful experience as a team lead and/or leadership role, organizing the work of other designers and feedbacking and validating their deliveries
  • You are creative, flexible and open to feedback and iterations, and a good team player
  • You have an analytical mind, and are able to assess and analyse design problems to then construct the best design solutions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as leadership to communicate and drive the implementation of the creative vision in design
  • Role Model: You set a high standard and expect the same from your team. Attention to detail, meticulous and organized working habits to ensure high quality in day-to-day work
  • Fluent in English
  • A solid knowledge of the universe of The Division IP (its world, stories, characters, key mechanics and game systems, etc), and a passion for believable game world grounded in reality, is a plus
  • Experience with Unreal Engine is a plus.
  • Knowledge of mobile platform development is a plus.
