About the Team
The Product Policy team is responsible for the development, implementation, enforcement, and communication of the policies that govern the use of OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT store, and the OpenAI API. The team is instrumental in developing policy frameworks and strategic priorities to best enable both innovative and responsible use of AI so that our groundbreaking technologies are truly used to benefit all people in pursuit of our mission.
About the Role
As a Product Policy Manager at OpenAI, you will shape policy development, implementation, and enforcement - collaborating with various external and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate can bring clarity to the policy and product systems that are the highest priority to develop, balancing both short and long-term needs.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
You’ll have several responsibilities, including:
Creating and updating the external-facing policies, such as our usage policies, that users and developers must follow. These policies should be defensible, internally clear, and actionable, and establish clear measures of success based on product enforcement or usage outcomes.
Identifying strategic policy priorities amidst a rapidly changing technological and societal landscape. This includes creating clear policy prioritization frameworks that consider a variety of internal and external inputs.
Shaping responsible AI model and product launch by identifying clear policy objectives, risks, and mitigations specific to each launch.
Establishing detailed internal standards that specify the types of content, actors, and behaviors that are permitted and not permitted.
Manage and build out an internal enforcement protocol, including determining appropriate actions for different types of violations.
Regularly consult with various external groups, including developer organizations, civil society organizations, and subject matter experts, to gather feedback and ensure our policies are defensible.
We're looking for these qualities, experience, and skills:
Product / Public Policy Experience: This role will need to navigate a changing regulatory landscape and understand the requirements of various external bodies and stakeholders. Experience working directly on AI policy issues is highly desired.
Technical & Product Experience: Given the complexity and rapidly evolving nature of our product stack, a background in – or experience working closely with – technical, product, or engineering roles will be essential. This role will need to translate and collaborate closely with product teams to ensure the execution, enforcement, and measurement of our policies.
Ideally, this experience includes time working directly on generative AI.
Subject Matter Expertise: Ideal candidates have experience addressing complex societal topics or risk areas (i.e. safety issues, disinformation, elections, youth well-being, health, etc.) at the intersection of technology, with a demonstrated ability to navigate hard trade-offs and align key stakeholders.
Coordination: As OpenAI grows, this role must quickly and effectively align diverse teams and stakeholders. Experience driving alignment across diverse functions (product, legal, research, intelligence teams, global affairs, communications) will be essential.
External Engagement: This role must effectively communicate and represent our policies to external audiences, including users, partners, regulatory bodies, policymakers, and the general public.
