Lecturer or Professional Practice Assistant Professor (Advanced Manufacturing)

Overview

The Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education (TDTE) at Utah State University (USU) seeks candidates for a full-time, academic-year (9-month), non-tenure track term Lecturer or Professional Practice Assistant Professor position in the Advanced Manufacturing program. This position is located on the USU Eastern Campus in Price, Utah. The successful candidate will provide leadership and didactic instruction to students at USU Eastern and via distance technology to students located on the USU Blanding and USU Moab campuses and will mentor and direct the work of the laboratory across campuses.  To expand the availability of program course offerings, the successful candidate for this position may be asked to teach afternoon, evening, and dual (concurrent) enrollment courses.   

 

The review of applications will begin in spring 2025, and application reviews and interviews will continue until the position is filled. The starting date for this position is August 2025. 

Responsibilities

With a primary role assignment of teaching (95%), the successful applicant for this position will develop, teach, and improve courses in the advanced manufacturing technical certificate program. Instructional emphasis will be placed on providing excellent instruction and preparing students for industry certification and successful careers as manufacturing technicians. Specific courses within the work assignment include but are not limited to 3D modeling, Blueprint Reading, Additive and subtractive manufacturing practices, and Design for manufacturing. The faculty member will also collaborate with industry and community partners to seek input and curricular improvements for the program. The faculty member will also be expected to provide leadership for the program and to work collaboratively with other faculty members to enhance the success of USU’s manufacturing programs and students. Instruction to concurrent students, adults, and the local workforce, as applicable, will be expected. The additional role assignment is service (5%), and the successful candidate will be expected to provide meaningful service to the program, department, campus, university, profession, and community. 

 

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develop a new generation manufacturing curriculum that systematically advances from technical certificates to Associate of Applied Sciences (AAS) and Bachelor of Science (BS) within a statewide campus system
  • Design and promote a manufacturing program that first responds and then guides the additive manufacturing process for industry growth and diversification
  • Revitalize the machine tool technology curriculum and teaching processes, incorporating manual and automated processes for skill development and product integrity
  • Improve and implement an engineering drafting & design program that focuses on product development from design to production, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies
  • Advance strategies to assess and resolve manufacturing barriers in Utah and the nation using industry partners in shared teaching/development workspace
  • Recognize and respond to shifting economic policies and societal attitudes toward manufacturing
  • Teaching both theoretical and practical learning experiences
  • Directing, guiding, and evaluating student performance in a laboratory setting.
  • Coordinating and participating in Advanced Manufacturing program advisory committee (PAC) meetings
  • Teaching afternoon and evening courses, concurrent enrollment courses, and community/workforce training courses as needed
  • Teaching courses that provide workforce training and industry-validated qualifications
  • Managing, maintaining, and improving advanced manufacturing facilities, laboratories, equipment, and supplies
  • Recruiting students and providing career mentoring
  • Actively participating in professional growth and development
  • Serving on departmental, divisional, and university committees
  • Collaborating as a contributing member of the advanced manufacturing team
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Lecturer:

  • A.S., A.S. or B.S. degree, or higher, in manufacturing technology-based curriculum or a closely related field from an accredited school.
  • At least three years of industry or related experience where work is performed to a recognized industry standard practice. Up to two years of post-secondary education in a related field may be substituted for work experience.
  • A teaching-focused candidate who understands and is committed to an instructional role and mission of the Aviation and Technical Education department.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve instructional effectiveness and technical skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and team-building skills.

Professional Practice Assistant Professor:

  • In addition to the qualifications listed above:
    • M.S. degree or higher in a manufacturing technology-focused curriculum or a closely related field.
    • A teaching-focused candidate who understands and is committed to an instructional role and mission of the Aviation and Technical Education department.
    • Demonstrated ability to improve instructional effectiveness and technical skills.
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and team-building skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of three years of professional experience teaching secondary or postsecondary students in a technical education setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership in manufacturing processes.
