AI PROTOTYPING INTERN

ABOUT

Common Sense is a nonprofit organization that gives kids, families, and schools the tools to make informed choices about media and technology. Families know us for our independent, age-based reviews of movies, TV shows, books, games, podcasts, and apps. Educators use our free curriculum and edtech reviews to plan lessons and integrate technology into their teaching practice. At our core, we are a children's advocacy group. We draw on original research, industry expertise, and community partnerships to advocate for laws and policies that help kids thrive.

SCOPE

The AI Prototyping Squad is a small, agile team exploring how AI can enhance Common Sense’s mission, including both internal tools and user-facing products. This role is flexible based on your skills—whether through user research, prototyping, or AI-powered learning design, you’ll help shape the future of AI in media and education.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the AI prototyping squad to explore how AI can support kids, families, and educators.
  • Conduct user research (e.g., surveys, interviews, user tests) to gather insights.
  • Analyze feedback and synthesize actionable recommendations for the team.
  • Contribute to rapid prototyping—this could involve designing interactions, creating low-fidelity mockups, or coding small-scale proof-of-concepts, depending on skills.
  • Assist in documentation and presentations to share findings and prototypes with stakeholders.
  • Gain hands-on experience in AI, user research, and iterative prototyping in an education and nonprofit setting.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Current graduate student with an interest in AI, UX research, education technology, product design, or related fields.
  • Ability to think critically about AI’s role in education and media.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in at least one of the following:User research (e.g., surveys, interviews, usability testing, A/B testing).
  • Prototyping (technical or non-technical).
  • Educational content design or instructional design.
  • Willingness to iterate quickly, experiment, and adapt to new challenges.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • REPORTS TO: PM, AI Prototyping Squad
  • LOCATION: San Francisco, CA
  • DURATION: June 16 - August 22, 2025
  • PAY: $25/hr, up to 40 hours/week
  • This is a paid opportunity, and we will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
  • Interns must be available to attend weekly educational Lunch & Learns, which are held every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (PST).
