Job Description

Summary of Position

This position works with traditional and adult undergraduate students. The position provides culturally competent advising to Augsburg’s diverse undergraduate students, with a full range of support including orientation, academic program planning, course selection, and registration. The position works to monitor student progress and suggests and connects students with appropriate student support team members when students encounter academic difficulties, working holistically with students on issues of the hidden curriculum and navigating college systems. The person will coordinate with other University departments regarding programs that support student progress.

The advisor also works with the student information system and various data files and sources, and prepares a wide variety of reports using multiple data sources. The advisor keeps abreast of University and College policies and procedures, and rules and regulations to assist students in meeting academic requirements. The advisor does special projects as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provides advising for undergraduate students, prospective students, and transfer students, including but not limited to: assisting students on academic, career and personal issues; identifying the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assisting with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications. 
  • Assists students and faculty advisors with registration and scheduling issues, drop/add, change of registration and registration holds, and general advising questions.
  • Provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the student's interests, goals and abilities. Provides coordination and support to ensure student progress toward degree completion and graduation.
  • Supports the implementation and management of technology tools that support enhanced academic advising and student success strategies.
  • Keep abreast of higher education policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to assist students in meeting academic requirements.
  • Responds to inquiries, investigates, and resolves problems related to course registration, course selection and scheduling, academic success.
  • Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures to parents and prospective students as well as to current students and faculty.
  • In conjunction with the College and the Director of Academic Advising, coordinates the Department's participation in a variety of special admissions and advising events.

Additional Responsibilities

  • When staff members are out of the office or away from their desk, the team members share responsibility for their colleague's workload. This includes but is not limited to front desk coverage, responding to e-mails and phone calls, and administering assessment tests.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from various departments in: committee work, staff meetings, and consultation with individual academic departments and support services (Trio-SSS, CLASS, Counseling, Student Support Directors, Athletics, Center for Service Work and Learning, Residence Life, Information Technology, etc.)
  • Initiate and maintain connections with professional associations and colleagues, including: Minnesota Private College Advising Network and National Academic Advising Association.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Typical work environment is an office. (To ensure student confidentiality, Gage Center conference rooms are utilized when office partners have concurrent appointments).
  • Sedentary work for long periods of time.
  • Regular computer and phone use.
  • Driving/travel: must be able to drive a vehicle for business and maintain a current driver’s license.
  • Periods of intense work environment throughout the academic year.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, College Administration, or other closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of relevant professional work experience.  
  • Knowledge of counseling theories and student development required.
  • Knowledge of NACADA best practices required.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.

  • Ability to lead/teach; work in a team environment; and work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to reason/analyze; maintain confidentiality; and demonstrate patience, understanding.
  • Ability to show initiative; organize workflow; manage multiple projects; and handle frequent interruptions.

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits at Augsburg

  • The compensation range is $47,000 - $53,000 per year, DOQ.
