Role Description: |
The Controller directs accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, and payroll functions, and as part of the management team uses accurate financial information to help drive efficiencies and continuous improvement across the organization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: |
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provides daily planning and administration in the selection, assignment, supervision, promotion, discipline, and training of personnel within the unit. Manages and evaluates the progress of the Controller’s office towards meeting goals, and adjustments in objectives, work plans, schedules and commitment of resources.
Key Working Relationships:
Serves as a key financial representative for DC Water, engaging with internal stakeholders (Finance, Procurement, Operations) and external entities, including the DC Water Board, regulatory agencies (EPA, local jurisdictions), auditors, and financial institutions. Provides strategic insights to enhance financial transparency and accountability.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Required Experience: |
Ten (10) years of progressive experience in accounting/finance including seven (7) years of managerial experience. |
Minimum Education Requirements: |
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management or related field from an accredited college or university. |
Required Skills: |
Candidates with extensive government finance, utility accounting, public sector financial management, or large-scale enterprise financial operations experience will also be considered. |
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills. |
Strong analytical ,planning and organizational skills. |
Thorough understanding of financial modeling and generally accepted accounting principles. |
Proven ability to build trust across an organization by taking ownership of issues, working through challenges, and ensuring timely resolution of concerns. |
Demonstrated commitment to accountability, transparency, and fostering a culture of accuracy and continuous improvement. |
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to executive leadership, Board members, external regulators, and cross-functional teams. |
Utilizes personal computer and maintains working knowledge of applicable software programs (i.e..MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.). |
