Position Description
The Department of Computer Science and the Department of
Mathematics at Texas State University seeks applications for two
tenure- track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor,
Associate Professor and/or Professor ranks. The appointments will
be at least 60% in one of the departments. The primary departmentwill depend on the qualifications of the candidate.The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain astrong record of high-quality research in Data Science, MachineLearning, and Artificial Intelligence. The successful candidatewill teach mathematics and/or computer science courses at theundergraduate and graduate levels and will show dedication tomentoring students. The successful candidate will also participatein self-governance of the primary department through service to thedepartment, college, and university, and engage in service to theprofessional communityThe Department of Mathematics is a growing department with a broadrange of strengths in Analysis, Topology, Algebra, Combinatorics,Statistics (including Data Science and Machine Learning), AppliedMathematics, Logic, and Mathematics Education. The department isexcited to start its new Ph.D. program in mathematics in Fall 2025to complement its Ph.D. program in mathematics education and itsmaster’s programs. Our faculty members have over $3 million inactive grants. Our faculty members include a Sloan Fellow andmultiple NSF CAREER awardees.The Department of Computer Science is dedicated to advancingexcellence in both education and research. Our faculty are activelyengaged in transformative research across diverse areas, withparticular strengths in artificial intelligence and machinelearning, cybersecurity and networks, human-computer interaction,high-performance computing, and software engineering. Facultymembers have received prestigious awards, including faculty awardsfrom Facebook, Google, and IBM, multiple NSF CAREER awards, a DOEEarly Career, and a PECASE award. The Ph.D. program is the first inTexas to combine advanced computer science theory and practice withentrepreneurial and commercialization skills, preparing students tobecome leaders in both academia and industry.Both the Mathematics and Computer Science departments strive tocreate a welcoming environment that invites students from a widerange of backgrounds to major in mathematics and computer science.We invite applicants who are enthusiastic about mentoring studentsat undergraduate and graduate levels to reach theirpotential.Both departments are dedicated to success of their junior faculty,providing support through formal mentoring, reduced teaching andservice loads, collaboration and collegiality, and opportunities toparticipate in university-wide professional developmentprograms.Both departments are in the College of Science andEngineering and will be moving into a newly constructed building inFall 2026.The Austin-San Antonio area has many opportunities forcollaborations outside of the university and increasing demand forexpertise in AI and data science. Major companies such as Dell,Tesla, Google, IBM, AMD and Apple have a large presence in theAustin area. San Antonio is home to USAA and Rackspace and is acenter for healthcare and biosciences. Many of our faculty havecollaborations with industry and nearby universities.The selected candidate will be given the appropriate rank based onexperience, and college and university regulations.Required QualificationsRequired Qualifications (AssistantProfessor):• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, ComputerScience or a closely related field prior to employment.• Evidence of or potential for research excellence in DataScience, Machine Learning, and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recentpublications will be emphasized, but all publications will beconsidered.• Evidence of or potential to obtain external funding• Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching andmentoring students.• An ability to contribute to the primary departmentalmission.Required Qualifications (AssociateProfessor):• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, ComputerScience or a closely related field.• Evidence of research excellence in Data Science, MachineLearning and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recent publications willbe emphasized, but all publications will be considered.• Evidence of having obtained research grants.• Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring students.• Ability to contribute to the mission of the primarydepartment.Required Qualifications (Professor):• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, ComputerScience or a closely related field• Evidence of a sustained record of research excellence in DataScience, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence.
