People Analytics Lead

About the Team

OpenAI’s People team aims to hire, engage, and retain world-class talent who will ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Our People Operations team, nested within People, is responsible for driving core People processes and delivering meaningful insights from our employee data. Our team provides essential support to employees and managers, partnering closely with key stakeholders across the organization to streamline processes and enhance decision-making.

About the Role

As the People Analytics Lead, and founding team member, you will be responsible for shaping and launching our first People Analytics function from the ground up. You'll develop a strategic vision, implement critical analytics tools, and partner with stakeholders across People Operations, Recruiting, and the broader business to deliver actionable insights.

Balancing strategic thinking with hands-on technical execution, you'll design analytics solutions, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high adoption and continuous improvement. This team will likely grow over time, however, you’ll be the main point of contact and executor upfront. This role reports to our Head of People Operations & Insights.

What You'll Do:

  • Set the strategic vision and roadmap for the People Analytics function, driving the evolution from foundational reporting to delivering actionable insights.

  • Lead the implementation and adoption of a new people analytics tool (e.g. Visier or One Model), including vendor management, system configuration, and user enablement.

  • Collaborate closely with key stakeholders (HR Business Partners, Recruiting, Compliance, Mobility, People Systems teams, and business leaders) to identify analytics needs, translate business questions into analyses, and proactively provide actionable insights.

  • Own and oversee the end-to-end analytics process, from analysis and visualization through storytelling and influencing strategic decisions, with support from partners who handle data extraction.

  • Hands-on development of analytics dashboards, reports, and data visualizations, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring data integrity and accuracy.

  • Provide thought leadership, guidance, and education on data-driven decision-making to HR and business leaders.

  • Drive adoption of analytics solutions, educating stakeholders to leverage data effectively in their decision-making processes.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and influencing skills; ability to build strong partnerships across functions and levels.

  • Proven experience balancing strategic planning and tactical execution, comfortably working hands-on in detailed data tasks while shaping long-term analytics strategies.

  • 5+ years of experience specifically in analytics roles, with broader professional experience preferred.

  • Proven experience implementing and/or managing analytics platforms (e.g., Visier, One Model).

  • Deep proficiency with Workday reporting, HR analytics tools, and database systems such as Snowflake.

  • Strong data visualization and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex analyses into clear, actionable insights.

Workplace & Location

This role is based in our San Francisco office, and we chose this location due to proximity to our core group of People and cross-functional teams. We offer relocation support to new employees.

We use a hybrid work model: three days in the office per week with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays.

Our open-plan offices have height-adjustable desks, conference rooms, phone booths, well-stocked kitchens full of snacks and drinks, three in-house prepared meals daily, a private outdoor space for working in the sun or socializing, nap rooms, private bike storage, and more.
