People Business Partner

Doing business today requires trusting a rapidly expanding set of identities to access, use, and share privileged data in the cloud. This distributed web of data, relationships, and access points is difficult to track, let alone secure. To limit the risk of breach and blast radius, large organizations need to manage who has access to what, what they can do with that access, and when they can take action. That's where Opal Security comes in — our identity security platform enables scalable and efficient implementation of least-privilege access. Customers like Figma, ScaleAI, and Databricks say it is the best tool to administer a least privileged access model across all of their data - SaaS, Cloud and on-prem.

As a People Business Partner, you'll help us build a culture capable of delivering on our bold mission to secure every identity and access pathway. Our ideal candidate has worked on multiple components of a successful People organization — from employee experience to HR to systems administration, and all the things in between. We're a small team and we're looking for someone eager to roll up their sleeves and deliver impact across a wide variety of people priorities.

In this role, you’ll be joining an experienced team with direct experience building through massive growth at companies like ScaleAI, Datadog, Abnormal Security, and Amplitude. On the back of this experience and our success to date, we’ve raised over $32M from leading investors including Greylock and Battery Ventures. Join us as we build the next-generation identity security platform!

Your responsibilities

As a fast-growing team, we expect the responsibilities of this role to evolve over time. Here are some of the areas where you could have an immediate impact:

  • Trusted Advocate: Serve as a strategic partner to employees, managers, and leaders, fostering a positive, inclusive, and equitable workplace experience. Provide expert guidance and coaching on employee relations matters and professional development.

  • Operational Excellence: Manage comprehensive HR responsibilities, including seamless onboarding, offboarding, and ongoing employee lifecycle processes. Ensure accurate, secure, and compliant maintenance of employee files and HR records.

  • Systems Administration and Analytics: Maintain and optimize our HR technology ecosystem, including platforms like SequoiaOne, PEOCanada, and other employee management systems. Strategically integrate tools to enhance operational efficiency and maintain data integrity. Own and develop comprehensive data reporting for the People function.

  • Performance Management: Design, implement, and oversee comprehensive performance management processes that align with our company values and business objectives. Facilitate calibration sessions, provide manager training, and ensure fair and consistent performance evaluations.

  • Payroll Management: Oversee payroll processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely execution across multiple jurisdictions. Maintain awareness of tax implications and regulatory requirements affecting payroll administration.

  • Visa and Immigration Support: Manage the visa application and renewal processes for international employees. Collaborate with legal counsel to ensure compliance with immigration laws and provide guidance to employees navigating the immigration system.

  • Benefits Administration: Professionally manage our comprehensive suite of health, wellness, and retirement benefits. Collaborate closely with our benefits broker to ensure prompt responsiveness and effective resolution of employee benefits, tax, and administrative matters.

  • Compliance: Lead and drive all People/HR compliance processes and audits. Proactively assist in updating company policies and procedures to maintain robust legal and regulatory alignment.

Our ideal candidate

  • 5+ years of experience in HR operations, preferably within a high-growth B2B startup or consulting environment

  • Proven track record of building foundational people programs that authentically reflect an organization's unique culture, values, and business strategy

  • Demonstrated expertise in administering HR systems (e.g., Sequoia, Sparrow), Applicant Tracking Systems (e.g., Ashby), and Google Workspace

  • Experience with payroll administration and understanding of multi-state and international payroll requirements

  • Hands-on experience managing visa and immigration processes for international employees

  • Strong analytical and reporting skills with the ability to translate HR data into actionable insights for executive decision-making

  • Experience designing and implementing effective performance management systems that drive employee growth and organizational success

  • Solid understanding of employment-related laws and regulations (state, federal, and international), or a rapid learning capacity to build such expertise

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills — ability to make people feel genuinely seen, supported, and welcomed

  • Embodiment of a scrappy, adaptable, low-ego approach with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and drive results

This is a hybrid position in our NYC office (3+ days/week)
